The accident at Estcourt High School on Wednesday was awful. While taking my children to school, I passed by the accident scene and my heart rushed into my throat, hoping that there were no fatalities. When I stopped, I learnt that the children were all okay.

My heart went out to not only the children who were in the taxi but to their parents who received this ominous news that their children were involved in an accident. It made me realise how vulnerable these children and parents have become. They place their trust in the hands of these taxi drivers who we know don’t think twice about breaking the rules of the road.

Their taxis are overloaded and sometimes not roadworthy, they speed, cut in front of other vehicles and generally don’t have any concern for drivers or pedestrians. I hope that our traffic officers will keep a close watch on taxis.
