Madam – Chelmsford Dam

I want to bring some major issues to the attention of the powers that be about our beloved Chelmsford Dam. Considering that the dam is a big attraction for us who love a peaceful day out fishing, picnicking or to enjoy the quietness of nature, I appeal to the parks board and the municipality to please give attention to:

The potholes on the road leading to the dam. (we do appreciate the fact that most of the potholes have been fixed).

The deep gullies and holes on the roads within the dam site, especially leading to the red sands area

Repairs to the shelters alongside the dam that are in dire need of attention with the festive season fast approaching

The cleaning up of zebra poo that leaves a terrible stink, and attracts flies.

Clear more areas for fishing spots, and some effort should also be implemented to uproot the reeds and bamboo that are slowly and subtly overgrowing some prime fishing spots. (Look what happened to our once beautiful Amcor Dam!)

Many of us will remember when fishing was a sheer pleasure and enjoyment. When almost every second or third cast yielded a fish. Now, it seems like some people have exploited the sport, and through greed and selfishness have depleted the fish populations.

I suggest that strict rules be enforced at the dam, and that the principle of catch and release be imposed for the next three to four years at least, so that the fish species can recover and we can have the excitement of making reasonable catches again!

I also appeal to the contractors and building companies to offload their excess rubble and stones on the roads in the dam area, to assist with filling the holes and deep trenches.

Finally, please place some extra dustbins in strategic places (Thanks to ArcelorMittal that has donated some dustbin drums in the past) so that all and sundry can easily dispose of rubbish.

Seeing that Chelmsford Dam is our main attraction for a waterside outing in Newcastle, let’s do our best to take care of it for our own benefit, and for the benefit of generations to follow.
