Farmers close notorious Memel road

The Memel community and farmers worked together to halt the traffic at the three stops-and- go around Memel and the ambulance could move through effortlessly.

Madam – Farmers close notorious Memel road.

On October 9, traffic was periodically halted by farmers to make way for a Netcare Ambulance. In the ambulance was GJ, son of the well-known couple from Memel, Gideon and Chantell Bekker. GJ‘s head injury was caused by an accident with an off-road motorcycle.

After being in a coma for 24 hours at the ICU at Mediclinic Newcastle, his situation looked grim. It was then decided to transfer GJ to Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg. The Memel community and farmers worked together to halt the traffic at the three stops-and- go around Memel and the ambulance could move through effortlessly.

GJ’s condition initially deteriorated on arrival. Although the bleeding on the brain had stopped and swelling was decreasing, GJ was still in a coma.

On the third day however, GJ suddenly opened his eyes, started walking around in the ICU and recognised his parents. He was discharged a day later.

GJ’s parents, family and friends are all overjoyed at the miracle of having their son and friend back. Gideon and Chantell would like to thank each person for their overwhelming support and prayers. To the doctors and staff of Mediclinic Newcastle and the ambulance medics, a heartfelt thank you. And to our Heavenly Father, who made His presence and power so visible, the highest praise and gratitude.
