Traffic officers turn a blind eye to defaulters

Perhaps our municipality should reconsider whether our local traffic officers are really up to the challenge of their jobs or do we need to employ people who don't show any fear or favour?

Driving through Estcourt town during the Christmas and New Year rush was utter madness. Besides the awful condition our roads are in, drivers and pedestrians blatantly disobey the rules of the road…and this is sometimes done in the presence of traffic officers who do nothing. I witnessed this on Friday, January 2 in Victoria Street, the area that had become a temporary taxi rank.

Taxi drivers were making U-turns in the middle of the road, blocking off other road users, hanging out of the vehicles and speaking to each other, while other motorists wait to pass by and yet there is a traffic officer waiting in the line behind and he does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Even giving him a deadly look did not prompt him to at least blow his horn.

Perhaps our municipality should reconsider whether our local traffic officers are really up to the challenge of their jobs or do we need to employ people who don’t show any fear or favour? Traffic officers are quick to pull drivers over just to examine their driver’s licence and vehicle licence but when some drivers are committing road offences in front of them, they don’t act. It’s about time that our traffic officers stopped the cruise control and start to accelerate on what they’re meant to do.
