Carpe diem – seize the day

How we routine ourselves to employ our precious and invaluable time day by day is what determines the quality of our overall life

We live in a world of limited resources, be it money, food, water, etc. but of all the resources known to man; the one that if lost can never be regained is time. World renowned author Dale Carnegie often wrote about the one sure way to reduce stress is to live in “day-tight compartments.”

In essence we face so many stresses from work commitments, to relationships to health conditions, to financial needs, etc. but the sure way to reduce the pressure and anxiety derived from it all is to live each day to the maximum! While we cannot control what happens around us or to us to most extent; we can control how to respond to it, how to prepare for it and how to minimise the adverse impact it may have. All we have control of is our restricted time and how we consume it.

If in each day we make a conscience effort to make every fleeting moment count and to be pre-emptive then we are guaranteed to reduce our daily anxieties. It’s the easiest concept to comprehend yet we complicate our lives by not applying it faithfully. Rewind and think of your own life exactly 10 years ago… Did you eat foods that will make you healthy or silently destroy your health? Did you spend your spare evenings here and there smoking and consuming copious amounts of alcohol increasing your risk to diseases, squandering money, joining unfavourable company and regretting some dishonorable actions? Did you treat a loved one be it a parent or spouse in a manner they just did not deserve?

Did you waste time not investing in studying or a career that you wish today was a reality? Could you have been more financially able had you made different money choices? There may be some aspects you are pleased and proud of or there may be some that you simply regret.

You can never get back those precious years, it’s over, it’s gone. All you can do is learn from those mistakes and commit to make positive changes to forge ahead with an action plan to make the quality of your life of value. Holistically we need to soul search and keep track of how we use our precious moments again and again because it is so easy to be side tracked from making superior personal choices, which we rightfully deserve.

Of all the resources we have, time should never be under appraised. How we routine ourselves to employ our precious and invaluable time day by day is what determines the quality of our overall life.
