The challenges facing the 21st century teen

Bullying has reached alarming levels. It's no longer just the troubled child, but the spoiled brat who is doing the bullying

TEEN GAMES
Choking games Aka Funky chicken, space monkey, sleeper hold, and the blackout. It is the stupid act of suffocating oneself or someone else to achieve a high without the use of alcohol or drugs.

Children strangle themselves with belts, scarves or ties. They report that as the blood flows back into the brain, they feel warm and happy. This feeling is reported to be the death of 1000’s of brain cells!! Many children worldwide die every year playing these games. It’s hard to track statistics because cases are often reported as suicide.

Huffing
The inhaling of household or other chemicals to achieve a high is becoming increasingly popular and highly dangerous. Bag, straws and swabs are used and substances include household chemicals, dry- cleaning sprays, thinners and even aerosol cream.

Bullying
Bullying has reached alarming levels. It’s no longer just the troubled child, but the spoiled brat who is doing the bullying. Cyber bulling in particular has rocketed and is responsible for many cases of depression, reluctance to go to school and attempted suicide. Cyber bulling includes malicious texting or posting nasty comments or videos on social media sites.

92 percent of cyber bulling takes place on Facebook, followed by twitter ( 23 percent ). One child wrote “My teacher says I’m a bully and that’s so unfair! All I did was text a loser about the fact that everyone hates her and now I’m being called a bully.”

SEXUAL ACTIVITY
Research studies done in the late 80’s concluded that an average person sees 9 230 actual or implied sex acts per year on TV. And 81 percent of that sexual activity – 94 percent on day time soap operas is extra marital. That means that an average teen watching TV for 10 years – between the ages of 8 and 18, would see almost 75 000 acts of illicit sex – and TV has only grown worse since those studies were done. Even if your child doesn’t watch, peers do and they have a huge influence. Promiscuity kills. Pregnancy is the least of their worries. One in four young adults are infected with sexually transmitted infections. There are 30 STIs, some with no symptoms.
