Drunk driver kills bright learner

A blossoming flower of the nation has been destroyed by a drunk driver who had no care and respect for the road

Editor – I am writing this letter to comment about your article published on page 3 of the March 20 edition under the headline ‘Pedestrians on sidewalk hit by car’.

Two pedestrians were seriously injured after a bakkie crashed into them in Lyell Street on Saturday, March 14. I am an educator at Magwababa High School and this accident saddens me very much. One of the pedestrians was a hardworking and most humble Grade 12 learner, who died in hospital on Sunday, March 15. His funeral was held on March 22.

What makes our hearts sore is that the driver was heavily drunk, with two drunk passengers. In the car were bottles of alcohol. A blossoming flower of the nation has been destroyed by a drunk driver who had no care and respect for the road.

What is justice doing for our victims? Soon the driver will be out of jail and will be found walking proudly on the street. The SAPS honestly do their job, but I think the justice system is not fair enough to victims.

Our school lost a very bright learner, and the family lost a very respectful and humble son.

Editor, I truly believe there should be harsh punishment for drunk drivers. Traffic cops are doing their jobs, but they cannot be on the road 24/7.

Who is to blame if drivers like these take away innocent lives? Recently, the nation lost the Minister of Services & Administration from Limpopo Province, Mr Collins Chabane, due to a drunken truck driver. We, as Magwababa staff and learners, hope and believe God will answer our prayers and let justice take its course.

I remember Genesis 4:10: Abel’s blood was crying unto the Lord from the sand. Let our loving learner’s blood cry from the sand and let God judge these people accordingly… Lala uphumule Kubheka, Masoboda, Mxokozeli… You will always be remembered by all. Your smile, love and respect will always be in our hearts.
