Sir
At about 1.30pm on April 20, a person with a private vehicle (no identification on the vehicle or on his person), said he wanted to take the electrical reading from my electrical supply and requested to enter my property (I keep it locked for various reasons).
I requested that he identify himself and all he could say was that he is from the municipality in Ladysmith – no letter from Endumeni municipality, no equipment to take electrical readings, no ID on his vehicle, or on his person, nothing.
I then asked him how is it that the municipality sent people to my house to take electrical readings when I already phoned them at Endumeni municipality on April 8 and given them the electrical reading?
He replied, “oh, you phoned them,” (while fiddling with his cell phone) and he then left in his private vehicle.
I also noticed that he had no clipboard or paper with him and he also did not have any equipment with him to enter electrical readings.
That, appeared to me to be very suspect. All he had with him was his cell phone. Rather safe than sorry.
In the past, I had people calling at night at my place claiming that they are doing an electrical survey on behalf of Eskom on all residents’ geyser installations and selling contraptions consisting of a timer, connected to a electrical contractor (which was supposed to save me hundreds of Rands) for the awful amount of R13 000. I realised that it was a scam and after questioning them and mentioning that I am going to call Eskom the next day concerning the matter, they disappeared.
They later proved to be scammers who wanted to make some quick bucks as Eskom confirmed that they did not send anybody to do any survey on their behalf at the time.
I don’t just trust anybody entering onto my property unless they can provide the necessary identification and proof, and even then it is a relatively good precaution to first phone the particular institution which that person(s) claims to represent.
