Madam – Brrrr!

There’s a definite chill in the air and I can’t help wondering if this winter will be the worst we’ve ever had. I personally am hoping for some snow this year. The snow last time seemed to wash away all that was glaringly disturbing about our town and coat it in a beautiful layer.

I think back to the times we have had snow and I have only the fondest memories. I remember once it snowed in July, when I was still in school and we were in the middle of exams. The physics exam had to be postponed because the traffic department was working hard to prevent accidents and were shutting down roads which made it hard for students to get to school on time.

We were in the classroom and waiting for the exam to start, cramming formula and repeating notes under our breath, and then every student’s dream came true – we were told the exam would not be written owing to the unpredictable weather!

My friends and I whooped for joy and when we went outside, it was to find the whole school had gone still because it had started snowing. Students were told to contact their families and arrange to be picked up.

Well, we weren’t having that! A group of us took a walk down the road to a convenience store where we proceeded to buy hot chocolates, ice cream (we were young and crazy) and sweets. Bundling up in extra layers of blazers and jerseys, we had to improvise and use socks as gloves while we enjoyed our frozen treats and delicious hot chocolates.

After contacting our parents, we then bought take aways and went to one of our friend’s homes, where we put on movies and lit a fire and enjoyed our morning of de-stressing after a long few exam weeks.

It might only be a small memory, but it was special to me. Of that group of friends, I think I am the only one who still lives in Newcastle. We are spread far and wide, and each is successful in their own right.

But on that cold, exam-free winter day, the snow brought us together and made us appreciate the joys of small town life. It’s memories like this that make us all call Newcastle ‘home’.
