A week ago we spent four days in the Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Reserve at the Impila Camp. The roads in the reserve are best described as very narrow, potholed, and corrugated. Maximum permissible speed is 40kph.

We were viewing some white rhino next to the road when we heard a vehicle approaching at speed, hooting, with head lights on bright, closely followed by six BMW cars with blue lights flashing. To protect ourselves and our vehicle we drove into the bush.

One wonders:

This reserve is part of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Parks concerned with conservation and ecotourism. Is this park perhaps used as a short cut by the VIPs to and from Ulundi, or to attend supposed conferences within the park?

It was interesting to hear the comments of the overseas visitors who witnessed this display of blatant arrogance.

I cannot imagine the carnage had they rounded a corner at the speed they were travelling and had been blocked by a herd of elephants. Which way are we going?
