Editor – The Draft Budget is out, municipal elections are coming up and people are wondering if a cross on a piece of paper on August 3 will make any difference to how their town is run.
The Draft Budget public participation meeting degenerated into a “slag” fest, with irate members of the community lambasting municipal officials on how their hard-earned ratepayers’ money is being spent. Those hosting the meeting had to keep on taking a break to come up with answers to placate the audience; not a good sign. You should have the answers at your fingertips and the answers should make everyone happy, but no!
Now the issues are going to be tabled at an upcoming council meeting. More time to come up with answers when no one is around. No one wants to see revenue going on fat salaries instead of improving the upkeep of the town.
There was a time when politicians regarded themselves as servants of the people and there to serve. Salary increases were the last thing on their minds. Come to think of it, councillors had full-time jobs aside from their political duties and didn’t earn a hell of a lot for the latter. It’s time we got back to that ethos where working for the public is a calling.
So who will be the first to give up their salary increase?
Ha, didn’t think there would be a show of hands from the gravy train brigade!
