Electricity is as important as water, yet streetlights are left on

Do we really want to reach a stage when we have no electricity or water?

Editor – Water is a big concern these days, but we can’t afford to forget about the importance of electricity and also using it sparingly. I say this because recently I have noticed that the streetlights are remaining on throughout the day in Francis Road and Poort Road.

These are long stretches of road that are dotted intermittently with streetlights, so just imagine all the power that is being wasted with these lights burning full force all day when the sun is shining and they are not needed.

Come on, municipality! Yes, we know water is a big issue these days and that’s foremost on everyone’s mind, but we can’t afford to take our foot off the pedal when it comes to power. The warnings still flash onto the television screen at night – ‘red alert’, electricity usage is too high, turn off all non-essential appliances and lights. The latter burn bright in the daylight in Ladysmith, so need we say more?

This is a terrible waste of electricity, putting unnecessary pressure on Eskom, and then we complain when they want to hike tariffs. Do we really want to reach a stage when we have no electricity or water? What a sorry state we’d be in then, damn!

Let’s be wise when it comes to the things we rely on in life. Without them, we would all cry crocodile tears and then it would be too late.
