Sir
On August 3 voters go to the polls for the local government elections. Looking at the street poles, decorated with political posters, it appears as if voters have a limited selection of candidates – something of a rogue’s gallery.
It is sad that politics dictates local government which should be about pavements, potholes and water. Unfortunately political parties – especially the ruling party – use local government to ensure that they get a slice of the tender pie and enrich themselves. They have kept themselves in power by hiring usually incompetent, party lackeys as officials to run the town into the ground. Rolling out a few last minute housing projects – that were promised five years ago and never materialised because of incompetence by the ANC-led national and provincial departments – will be enough to persuade the election fodder to vote in their direction. Sadly, we are sailing on a ship of fools.
I would urge voters to think carefully before putting a cross on a ballot paper. Remember: these politicians, especially from the ruling party, only come calling every five years – for the next five years they will eat, drink and be merry and leave you in despair.
