The name “Reg Pearse” (or R O Pearse) is well-known in South Africa, mostly for the magnificent books that he wrote – especially the classic “Barrier of Spears” about the Drakensberg range.
Lesser known is that for 11 years he was Vice-Principal (1923-1934) at what is now called Dundee High School. He was also (for a term!) principal of Glencoe Primary School, Newcastle High School (five years) and, of course, Estcourt High School (24 years).
In 1934 he and his young wife, Edith (née McKenzie), made an epic journey – and remained happily married for many more years! – to Uganda and back in a Model “T” Ford! He wrote letters back to his family in South Africa which, unbeknown to him, were sent for publishing with William Blackwood of London; it became his first book, Empty Highways. Ten Thousand Miles by Road and Lake through East and Central Africa.
