Concerned over the non-transformation of soccer in South Africa

I am concerned that transformation in sport is really a way of reducing standards and ensuring that South Africa’s national teams are non-competitive.
Cricket and rugby have been victims of this – even at high school level – the quota system ensures that not necessarily the best players are chosen.
Like apartheid, this is an artificial system, and like apartheid, is doomed to fail. Gifted sports people who are not chosen for their teams because of the quota system will simply go elsewhere. Sadly, those who are chosen because of the quota system will surely feel uncomfortable knowing that they are not perhaps the best player for that particular position.
Strangely, football – soccer as it is called here – is not affected. The millions earned from the 2010 World Cup should have gone into development. We do not see that. We see cricket development and rugby development – particularly locally speaking Sentraal who do a brilliant job – where is soccer attracting all kids of all colours to play the sport? Bafana were once 13th in the world and tops in Africa. Now we do not qualify for Africa and are about 80th in the world. Yet the Sports Minister does nothing. He is quite happy to see the Aussies and the All Blacks slaughter the Boks and South Africa’s sporting prowess slide into the mud.
