Jesus is the Light of the World
In a more real and literal sense, light may be an attribute of God beyond the understanding of fleshly eyes. God clothes Himself with light (Psalm 104:2) and God dwells in unapproachable light (1 Timothy 6:16).
“This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5
The Christian message is neither a philosophical speculation, nor a tentative suggestion, nor a modest contribution to religious thought, but a dogmatic affirmation by those whose experience and commission qualified them to make it.
GOD IS LIGHT! That is the way Genesis and John’s Gospel starts; the Word of God…The Light of Men.
Of all the statements about the essential being of God, none is more comprehensive than ‘God is Light’. It is His nature to reveal Himself, as is the property of light to shine; and the revelation is of perfect purity and unutterable majesty. We are to know God as a personal, very real being, infinite in all His perfections, transcendent. “For this is what the high and lofty One says – He who lives forever, whose name is holy; ‘I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit.'” (Isaiah 57:15). He desires to be known and has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The categories of light and darkness belong to the universal language of religious symbolism. Light stands for God’s realm of truth, righteousness, purity, joy, and ineffable glory. Darkness stands for this fallen world of sin, secrecy, evil, ignorance, wickedness and the abode of the lost.

When the validity of Jesus’s testimony is questioned in the Gospel of John (8:12-30), Jesus Himself declared, “…I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12).
If we turn our faces away from Jesus and towards the darkness, or any system of belief that is not Christ centred, we cast a shadow on our understanding of God. But when we see God in the face of Jesus then God is Light – light on everything.
A Prayer: O Father, there are many who, not seeing the face of Jesus, have misjudged You and misunderstood Your purposes. I am glad that to me Your Son is truly the Light of the World. Amen.
