Keep your dogs calm during fireworks

Have a safe place for them - be it at your feet or hidden under the bed

Diwali has come and gone, but fireworks ‘season’ has just started. Guy Fawkes is November 5 and before you know it, it will be Christmas and New Year, and all of these occasions usually involve fireworks.

Although they are impressive when they explode and beautiful when they light up the nighttime sky, anyone with pets knows how terrified animals become at the sound of fireworks being let off!

Some dogs have no problem with the sight and sound of fireworks, if they’ve been desensitized. Hunting dogs, for example, grow used to the sound and smell of hunting rifles and gun powder.

However, most pets are not used to loud bangs and become uneasy (which is an understatement in most cases).

Here are a few tips to keep your dogs calm during the upcoming festivities:

1. You should remain calm. Do not get upset and irritated with them; it is not their fault that they are afraid.

2. Have a safe place for them. Be it at your feet or hidden under the bed. A lot of dogs prefer a small, enclosed area like a bath tub or crate.

3. Get them calming tablets from your local vet, which you give to them an hour and a half before the fireworks begin. This will keep them calm for a few hours.

4. Do not leave them alone in the house; they calm down easier when they have human companionship.

5. Watch a movie or listen to some music, so that the dogs hear that instead of just fireworks.
