LETTER: Don’t be selfish with water

If you carry on wasting water it won't be very long until we will be in a state of emergency again...

Madam – We are very thankful for the recent rains, but we are still not doing enough to conserve enough water so we don’t end up in disaster in the event of persisting drought.

Every week there is an article detailing what the dam levels are and encouraging the community to save water, but very few people actually pay attention to the warnings and think just because we had some heavy rains, things can go back to normal.

This is not the case!

Last week, the dam was almost 58 per cent full, but that doesn’t mean we are in the clear.

If you carry on wasting water by watering your gardens a few times a week and leaving taps leaking or running, it won’t be very long until we will be in a state of emergency again, and all the rains will have been for nothing.

I think it is just ignorance and carelessness that lead to water wastage. Some people don’t pay for the service, yet waste without a care in the world because they are not paying for water.

They fail to realise their careless actions have far-reaching consequences. People can live without food for days, but water is essential. You cannot live without water. The human body is made up of mostly water, and dehydration can lead to death.

I want to encourage the community to stop being selfish. Don’t think only about yourself and who will compliment your lovely green lawn and pretty flowers. Use water sparingly, because the day will come when you will not have any, and then your lovely lawn won’t seem so important any more.
