‘Makeshift butchery’ must be stopped

This unhygienic act promotes infection to everyone around

Firstly, I would like to thank the gentleman who sent in the photograph for the article titled ‘Meat discarded in Alexandra Street’, which was published in last week’s Estcourt News.

Being a businessman in the surrounding buildings, I show remorse against this despicable act of pollution and infection. Due to the renovation of the taxi rank, this “makeshift” butchery had relocated to the corner of Phillip and Alexandra streets.

On numerous occasions, I have contacted the municipality to bring this problem to their attention but have never received any correspondence from the Municipal Manager.

Where are the environmental officers of Estcourt?
Why has the municipality allowed this “makeshift” butchery to continue to sell uncleaned and untreated meat to the public?
I understand that this is their method of obtaining an income, but at the same time, it should not endanger the lives of innocent people.

On various occasions I have seen them wash pieces of meat in a dirty puddle of water on the pavement. This unhygienic act promotes infection to everyone around.

Also there is fly infestation due to the stink from the decaying meat and drying blood, which is smeared on the pavements and gutters.
This is a mundane activity of these people and requires urgent removal and attention to prevent any further food poisoning and staphylococci infections.
