Madam – I felt a sense of relief after seeing Lorna Murdoch-Eaton’s assailant was found guilty. But was his sentencing strong enough, especially after it was discovered had similar convictions against him?
While one can only hope the suspect has now learned his lesson, what saddened me about the entire situation was reaction of bystanders. Have people become so callous that they no longer care about others?
Has it become acceptable to watch an elderly woman being beat up in public and go on about our daily routines, waiting to get home and share our “horror” on social media on what we had witnessed?
The lack of empathy in our world grows worse everyday; you just have to look around see what is happening in our community.
Thembelihle Child and Youth Care Centre has shut its doors, Morester Children’s Home is suffering from financial constraints and had to retrench six staff. This is all because people are so self absorbed and have forgotten about those in need.
Imagine if Lorna was your mother or grandmother, how would you have felt if people merely looked on? If your children were in a care facility because you had died, would you like it if the community showed absolutely no interest in the home and there was a chance your child might eventually become destitute?
We cannot continue ignoring the plight of others, because if you do, you lose what makes you human and the ability to love.
I weep for humanity.
