What happened to the classic music of yesteryear? You may say I’m a dreamer …

The only thing Beyonce didn't sing about was her bowel movements that day

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

Sounds familiar? It’s lyrics to an absolute classic, Imagine by John Lennon.

Sadly the youngsters of today don’t know what classic music is. They seem to think that saying the word ‘Work’ over and over again is good music. Yes, Rihanna, that was directed at you. Neither is repeating Panda (Desiigner) continuously. We all love pandas but that doesn’t mean they should feature so heavily in a song. What happened to thought provoking lyrics and songs that had a message.

Probably the most atrocious lyrics of all time belong to Beyonce in her song, 7/11. The song revolves around Beyonce singing about what she’s doing. The lyrics, which are all terrible, include ‘Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap it
Foot up, my foot up
Hold up now my foot up
(I’m spinnin’) I’m spinnin’ my foot up
Foot up yeah my foot up
(I’m spinnin’) I’m spinnin’ my foot up
Put my foot down yeah my hands up
My hands up, my hands up.
How that is defined as music is simply amazing.

The only thing Beyonce didn’t sing about was her bowel movements that day, which is strange, because the song resembled that. That song of Beyonce’s had four writers, seven producers and 11 musical directors – I kid you not!
Bohemian Rhapsody had one writer, one producer. Yes, it’s sad to see some of the songs being produced today. Basically, anything can be made into a song, as long as you have a catchy tune and an audience who will listen to it.

There is some hope at least. Some artists create genuine pieces of lyrical genius and prove that everything isn’t about making money. There are actually songs nowadays which make you feel good, which get you dancing and which don’t leave you asking, ‘just what did I listen to?’

But if you’re not into good music and prefer mindless dribble, then have no fear, South African Beyonce is here.
I’m writing, I’m writing
I’m writing now a column
I’m trying, I’m trying
I’m trying to make my deadline
Not very good was it? It’s just a sign of the times…
