Editor – What is happening to the state of music these days? As a rock / heavy metal / black metal fan, I guess I’m referring to that genre.
In the 80s, TV music channels like MTV played rock almost exclusively. The kids of today couldn’t conceive of such a thing!
I was at a night spot recently and the music playing was the usual dose of mindless electronic nonsense consisting of a catchy tune and negligible lyrics that are repeated ad nauseam. At one point in the evening, a guitar riff began to play and I thought yay, I get to listen to at least one semi-decent song.
The bar lady, though, turned up her nose and declared, “I don’t like this”, promptly skipping to the next nauseating “doof doof doof” number.
Anyway, I guess it’s a matter of each to their own, but where are the rockers in this town? You don’t see the T-shirts or the badges anymore. I know the bands have changed since the 70s, 80s and 90s, but where are the followers? Hiding in the woodwork, too scared to be labelled by the idiotic “sheep”?
What is scary is that the “dinosaurs” may not be remembered! Mötley Crüe played their last gig on New Year’s Eve last year and Black Sabbath (the pioneers of heavy metal) called it a day on February 4 this year in their hometown (city) of Birmingham, England. Does anyone still know the name Ozzy Osbourne or Tony Iommi?
Mention legendary singers like Ronnie James Dio and King Diamond and people look at you with a blank stare. Who??? Yes, who? Who will carry the torch forward while keeping the memory and music of the greats alive?
I wish I’d see someone parading a metal shirt through the streets with pride! Hail!
