A tribute to Mrs Phyllis McIntosh

Very few people live to reach a momentous milestone of 98 and granny you achieved this probably because you never called yourself old

As we pay tribute to a special lady who has made such an immense impact on all of our lives, I would like to take a moment to relive some wonderful memories and characteristics of my beautiful Granny.

Very few people live to reach a momentous milestone of 98 and granny you achieved this probably because you never called yourself old. You spoke of others as old but never yourself. You were so young at heart and this vivacious spirit will remain with us forever.

Granny you have taught us so many things, the first thing you taught us was class and sophistication, you oozed elegance and always dressed to impress when you went out. A nice blouse, a skirt and a dash of perfume and you were ready to go paint the town red.

School holidays were always the best of times for me or Nicole, not because we didn’t have to go to school, but because it would mean tea time with you at 10am, where there would always be an abundance of cookies and sometimes even home baked scones.

Granny, you loved outings and you were a remarkable lady, who even at 90 would do your own shopping without the help of mom. Tuesday’s were usually the day for the shops and you always dressed beautifully for it. You took such pride in yourself until the very end.
Of course the legendary Tuesday shopping trip would not be complete without a visit to a local coffee shop where you, mom and yiayia would toast to a successful shopping trip with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake and occasionally you would spice it up and have a toasted bacon sandwich.

Then Gran your cooking, well for anyone who has tasted your cooking, would know what I am talking about.

You always lived life to the fullest when it came to cooking, no extra virgin olive oil for you, your roasts were covered in lard, your boerewors was covered in lard and, oh wow, was it good. Every year for Christmas you used to make these beautiful mince pies covered in caster sugar.

If we could, we would hold onto you forever Granny, you were always there for me and my family and always made time for us. Your dream was to see Nicole and myself graduate from school and get our first jobs and your dream came true.

Granny thank you for everything you have done for us, the ways of life that you taught us by example and the extremely high bar you set for us to all strive to be like you.

This is not goodbye but see you later, sleep peacefully until we meet again. We love you my beautiful Granny and guardian angel.

Lots of love,
Your first great grandson, Michael, great granddaughter Nicole, granddaughter Angela, Pieter and daughter Alvia.
