Madam – I sincerely hope the residents of Newcastle took time off to reflect on our unique culture and heritage during this long weekend.
With all the bad news going around and with a government that we are not sure about most of the time, it is nice to take some time off and think about what makes each and every South African special.
Heritage Day should be about celebrating our differences and cherishing the fact that those differences do not separate us. Instead, we delight in being different, because in a way our differences unite us as a nation.
I hope this Heritage Day you chose to look beyond the superficial, and for a moment forget about the political and leadership problems we are facing in this country.
I hope you managed to spend time with those you love, having a lekker braai and choosing to forget about the stress of work.
I also hope you took some time to reflect on your blessings and not dwell on your failures and problems.
We all need a little break to remember to live every now and then. We tend to get so caught up in the daily grind that we forget to count our blessings. It is a blessing to wake up in a country that despite its problems, still allows us to hope and plan for better futures for our children.
South Africa is full of hope and possibility. We just need to have the courage to recognise and embrace it. We can all learn how to actively embrace a positive attitude, while still remaining true to who we are.
Negativity will only bring you down, and make your life that much harder. Learn to lean on each other, support one another, and smile.
