LETTER: What’s the problem with hunting?

People tend to forget their hamburgers and steaks comes from an animal which was raised for the sole purpose of being slaughtered.

Madam – I know several animal lovers will most likely disagree with me, but I was fascinated with Newcastle Advertiser’s back page on Retha Erasmus.

I am sure there are more female hunters in the world, but it isn’t everyday you read about a local woman who tracks animals down to hunt.

While I could never shoot an animal, my stomach is way to queasy for that, I do applaud Erasmus for using a bow and not a high powered rifle in her hunting expeditions. I also admire the fact that she does not hunt for trophies

As an animal lover myself, I also agree with her that animals suffer more in abattoirs. The close confines of the slaughter house and the smell of blood would scare almost any animal.

People tend to forget their hamburgers and steaks comes from an animal which was raised for the sole purpose of being slaughtered. Its last minutes of life were led in absolute terror, as it knew what was coming.

There is also the fact of overpopulation. If it were not for people such as Erasmus, certain animals would breed to such an extent that culling would need to be done. In this case, the meat of the carcasses would not always be used and therefore be waster.

Lets not judge those who hunt for the right cause, lets rather focus on poachers and hunters who kill for financial gain.
