Editor – How matric farewells have changed since my day!
I’m dating myself to say that I matriculated in 1990, but that’s the truth. Yes, even in those days it was a big deal… Everyone running around in search of the perfect partners and outfits and everything else.
There was the actual farewell and then the after-party, which has since become taboo and everyone stays at the venue basically all night. I think 1990 might have been the last real after-party on the night, out on a farm, and what a party it was! No details so as to protect the guilty!
But I digress. What has changed today is the supreme importance of the pre-farewell shenanigans. Red carpet stuff with the media snapping away and a huge crowd gathered to wildly cheer as each couple arrives in ever more flashy automobiles and other interesting modes of transport. You’d swear it was the Oscars or some other Hollywood extravaganza!
What goes on in the hall – the eating, speeches, dancing and such like – probably pales in comparison to what has gone before. I wonder if it’s all a bit of an anti-climax when the guys and gals reach the actual venue. “No one’s taking my photo anymore. Maybe that’s because of selfies?”
