Editor- I passed matric last year and I did fairly well. I am one of the few lucky matriculants who not only has a steady income, but also managed to follow my selected field in a tertiary institute.
However, I look at not only my peers but many young people who are not as lucky as I am.
Many do not have the means to study or the required experience to get a job.
Unemployment among young people is truly showing how bad our current economic situation is. If we had a stable and flourishing economy, there would be jobs readily available, whether low-paying or not.
Another issue is bursaries. Many students who need bursaries or scholarships, and have the potential to succeed in their chosen field, lack the financial support to do so.
The solution we can put in place as a town is to encourage entrepreneurs or small businesses.
Allow them to do well and expand; allowing for job creation and creating bursary or study schemes to help anyone who wants to study further.
This will not only help struggling students, but also our town as a whole. I am hoping we will rally as a community and slowly restore the town to the busy and friendly place it once was.
