Social media, especially Facebook (FB), is a way life. People say how they feel, think and comment on posts that they probably never would have had the opportunity or would have been brave enough to say blatantly during normal social interaction.

Posts with beautiful pictures and sayings are posted daily. You are either tagging or being tagged or if your FB friend shares a post, it is out in the open.

Privacy settings are not always set to protect your timeline from things you would normally not want to have on your timeline. Outrage, hurt feelings, and all these human emotions that were kept private in the past between family and close friends are now out in the open “FOREVER” to see, for anyone that cares to look. This is where the problem originates.

A large proportion of young adults are trying to secure employment. A fair percentage do have employment and are working towards building a career or using the current experience as a stepping stone for a bigger, better and brighter future with a large company. Many are still students and soon to be new job-seekers.

BE WARNED – TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS if you fall in any of these categories, even if you are older and have been working for a long period.

It is standard practice to look at the social conduct of job applicants. I have presided over many cases in which employees conduct are perceived to bring the company they are working for into disrepute.

You may be cool to your friends but that is not how a company will view you. Can a company invade your privacy in such a manner? Yes it is social media. It is public. You are judged by association and how you conduct yourself.
