Progress for embattled Shepstone Place

Mr Armstrong sees a bright future ahead for the local home for the aged

I am very happy that there has been a successful outcome to recent events at Shepstone Place Home for the Aged in Estcourt.

The reader may be aware that I have written several letters to the Estcourt News, some of which have been rather sharp. I felt that the pressure I was putting on the leadership of the home was necessary, especially after the shocking revelations of embezzlement by the previous administrator.

However, my intention has always been the welfare of the residents and staff of Shepstone Place, and in spite of people accusing me of wanting the leadership of the home for myself; I can assure the reader this has never been my intention.

Throughout the last few weeks many misunderstandings have arisen on both sides of the argument, and in some cases emotions have run high. Threats have been made, some directly and some anonymously, but in spite of all this, there has been a successful conclusion to the whole affair.

Mrs Lane has graciously agreed to step down, and Mr Brian Greaves has agreed to act as interim chairman until elections can be held. In one of my recent letters, I expressed my concern as to whether or not Mrs Lane, who lives at Shepstone Place, paid rent.

She assured me that she does, and I have no reason to doubt her word. I want to let the residents and leadership of Shepstone Place know that they have my full support.

As much as I have been critical up to now, so will I do my best to support and promote the home. I think that if there is one thing I have learned the last few weeks, is that the best results are always achieved by sitting down with people and resolving issues face to face.

We need to avoid letting our emotions cloud the issues, and not be afraid to talk the matter out directly with one another. I am very happy that reason prevailed, and that the issues were resolved.

I see nothing but a bright future for Shepstone Place, and I hope I can play a small part in making that happen.
Ian Armstrong
