Bowlers enjoy the rub of the green

Plenty of Newcastle teams came out tops at the Northern Zone Pairs competition last weekend.

Burnt End

The Northern Zone Pairs competitions got under way last Saturday with another pleasing entry for both men and women’s sections.

After three rounds of play, the section winners for the women were Nan Roos and Elsie Pretorius (Dundee), Anna Muller and Essie Slabbert (Dundee), Alice Howe and Ann Wood (Newcastle) and Samantha Shaw and Marie Botha (Newcastle).

The men’s sections were won by Billy Nicholas and Tony Reis, Douglas Steele and Steven Shaw, Trevor Moore and Eugene Schoon (all Newcastle), Hogart Gevers and Phillip Scheepers (Vryheid) and Tony de Poorter and Gerhard Smith (Volksrust).

The semi-finals and finals will be played this Saturday at Newcastle Bowling Club.

The FedAuto Summer Business League came to an end last Thursday evening with the play-offs between the two sections, and the following teams made the top five positions: Putt Putts, NN Mowerman, The Handbrakes, Polar Air and The Hoboes.

The wooden spoon went to The Hooligans and the team with the best spirit was the Karbochem Meerkatte.

All in all, this was another enjoyable and successful business league, with thanks to the committee and

Allan and Tillie Kirkland for their continued support of the Business League.

A tabs-in chicken competition played on Friday was won by Alice Howe, Jean Ball and amazing octogenarian, Koos Smit.
