Breakwaters surge into title victory
Through determination and resilience, the team clung to victory.
After six rounds of gruelling competition, Breakwaters clinched the title in the Natal Freshwater Angling Association’s League.
Going into the penultimate league, Breakwaters enjoyed a healthy lead of nine points over closest rivals, Itec Freespool.
After League 5, however, the gap was reduced to a mere three points.
Itec Freespool, Challengers and Docrat’s outscored the title contenders during the day’s angling, throwing the competition wide open.
It took determination and resilience for Breakwaters to defend its title.
Coming out all guns blazing at the final hurdle of the League, Breakwaters fielded a full side of team members to remain atop the log with 59 points, followed by Challengers and Itec Freespool on 39 apiece.
Docrat’s finished with 36 points, ahead of a vastly improved Chelmsford AC on 32 points.
At the tail end of the day’s performances, Riverside earned 30 points, Glencoe amassed 14 points, Stillwaters had 12 to show for its efforts, and Dannhauser recorded no score.
Monty Slabbert, Breakwaters captain, praised his team for their achievements despite a challenging season overall.
He specifically made mention of the team’s dedication and determined manner of retaining the title, despite the season being characterised by poor catches and close finishes.
“Their persistence has paid dividends,” he enthused.
The final log position of the league saw Breakwaters top of the pops with 96 points, followed by Itec Freespool (90), Challengers (82), Docrat’s (80), Riverside (55) and Stillwaters (52).
Glencoe, Dannhauser and Chelmsford propped up the bottom of the table.
Cheese Singh was crowned the league champion for Breakwaters, and the top five for League 6 specifically were Ashveer Singh, Nadir Chrisenduth, Reiner Solomon, Naesh Rajkumar and Kidd Rampersadh.
The internal knock out singles champion is Sumeet Buduram, while Shakeel Sheik and Monty Slabbert took the doubles crown.
Within the fold of Breakwaters, the top four anglers are Monty Slabbert (29 points), Kaveer Singh (27), Cheese Singh (26) and Shakeel Sheik (21), all with a chance of capturing the ‘Angler of the Year’ title.
Kaveer Singh and Rishen Nankoo were announced Social Outing Champions, for scaled and non-scaled fish respectively.
The NFWAA’s next fixtures include the Knock-Out finals at Richgate Park on April 6, where Breakwaters will face Riverside, and the play-offs between Itec Freespool, Challengers and Docrat’s on April 13.
The winner of this triple-header fishes against Breakwaters at the Grand Challenge on May 18 at Richgate Park.
