Newcastle Bowling Club was host to a number of thrilling competitions over the weekend.
Northerns Zone Pairs
The play-offs of the Northerns Zone Pairs competitions were held on Saturday, where excellent bowling was witnessed.
In the women’s event, Nan Roos and Elsie Pretorius (Dundee) beat their fellow club members, Hannelie Arndt and Essie Slabbert in one semi-final, while the other was contested by two Newcastle teams.
During this game, Alice Howe and Ann Wood beat Samantha Shaw and Marie Botha.
The final was a closely contested affair and was decided on the last end, where Nan and Elsie narrowly pipped Alice and Ann to annex the title.
In a preliminary play-off in the men’s section, Trevor Moore and Frans Schoon beat Billy Nicholas and Tony Reis.
The team went on to beat Douglas Steele and Stephen Shaw in the semi-final, with the other semi won by Phillip Scheepers and Hogart Gevers (Vryheid), who just defeated the Volksrust pair of Tony de Poorter and Gerhard Smith.
Phillip and Hogart started the final well, and midway in the game led by eight to five.
However, Trevor and Frans staged an excellent recovery with scores on the next six ends to deservedly win the pairs title after a superb run of form from both men.
Pro 10 Pairs
The inaugural Specsavers Pro 10 Pairs competition is being played by clubs throughout the country.
On Sunday, a total of 16 teams divided into two sections, competed in a unique format competition, where each bowler had only two bowls with which to play 10 ends for a possible total of 10 points each.
At the end of a long day, each team playing seven games, Section 1 was won by Andy Crosbie and Bert Rodgers.
This power team was unbeaten after peeling one game and winning the rest to finish on 13 points plus 108, followed by Douglas Steele and Anil Durgadin (11 + 94) and Samantha and Stephen Shaw (10 + 67).
Section 2 was won by John and Trevor Douthwaite (13 +82), with Ron and Alice Howe (12 + 88) and Simon Ball and Sue Hutchinson (10 + 80) close behind.
The two section winners are now set to compete in a District play-off competition, where the winners will qualify for the national play-offs to be held later this year.
A pleasing feature of the competition was the entry of many new bowlers, who gained valuable experience.
Forthcoming events
The monthly FedAuto meat competition will be played on Saturday afternoon and the Club Singles Championships will begin on Sunday.
Members are reminded to enter before the cut-off time on Friday afternoon.
