Second crown for Breakwaters
Winning the Knock Out Competition, Breakwaters earned its second title for the season.
The road to the finals was an unrelenting and difficult journey for angling club, Breakwaters.
En route to the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) Knock Out Competition, the club took on a series of formidable opponents with each round of the competition.
In the first round, Breakwaters fished against Itec Freespool.
Freespool was determined to end the dominance of Breakwaters in NFWAA competitions, and a close encounter was the latter triumphing by just 69 points over Itec’s 52 points.
Shortly thereafter, Riverside laid claim to the silverware with a win over Docrat’s Angling Club.
This took Riverside into the semi-finals against Chelmsford Angling Club, while Breakwaters had to contend with fierce competition of Dannhauser Angling Club, winning the contest by 72 points to 32.
With both teams only fielding 21 members instead of 25, Breakwaters and Riverside met for the final duel.
The day began with the drawing of zones, with Zone 2 the preferred zone to choose through the system, and rather poor fishing made it nearly impossible to predict the winner.
At the end of a difficult day, the weigh-in was the moment of truth.
By virtue of the scales, Breakwaters emerged victors by 48 points to 34, a victory which ensured the team earned its second title, the first being the League Champions crown earlier this year.
One cannot write off the effort by the gallant and determined Riverside outfit.
The top three anglers for Breakwaters were Sumeet Buduram (leading with six points), Ossie Oosthuizen (second place – six points) and Chris Lello (third place – six points).
Also, Monty Slabbert was crowned the Breakwaters Knock Out Champion.
Other title holders include Cheese Singh (the League Champion), Sumeet Buduram (Internal Knock Out Singles Champ), Shakeel Sheik and Monty Slabbert (Knock Out Doubles Champions).
The Social Outing Champions for scaled and non scaled respectively are Kaveer Singh and Rishen Nankoo.
Brendon Ramdeyal holds the title for the ‘heaviest scaled fish’ with a carp of 3,86 kilogrammes caught during League One, while the ‘heaviest non scaled fish’ was a barbel of 10,48kg reeled in by Shane Mangaroo during the first round of the Knock Out Competition.
All in contention for the Angler of the Year title are Monty Slabbert (34 points), Cheese Singh and Kaveer Singh.
The NFWAA’s remaining fixtures include the play-offs between Itec Freespool, Challengers and Docrat’s on April 13, where the winner advances to battle Breakwaters in the Grand Challenge on May 18.
