Bowlers find the right bias
The long weekend was filled with numerous bowling competitions for locals.
Burnt End
The long weekend was no respite for a number of Newcastle bowlers who were kept busy on the various greens.
Competing in the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls Pairs Playoffs, locals Alice Howe and Anne Wood had a wonderful run to win all five of their games and annex the title, followed by Dundee’s Nan Roos and Elise Pretorius.
Braam van Zyl and Chris Oberholzer (Harrismith) won the men’s title with Phillip Scheepers and Hogart Gevers (Vryheid) in second place.
Lone rangers
The Newcastle Bowling Club Novice Singles Competition was also played during the weekend, and is open to bowlers who have less than three years’ playing experience.
Adrian van der Merwe won all four of his games (8 + 55).
Young Aspen Shaw finished a creditable second with only one loss (6 + 14), while the female section was won by an unbeaten Vicky van der Merwe (6 + 33), with Trix Baasden in second (4 + 3).
Girl power
The Club Ladies Singles Championships were finalised on Monday.
Marie Botha defeated Michelle Steele and Alice Howe accounted for Sue Hutchinson in the semi-final games, setting up a closely contested affair between Marie and Alice.
Marie took the early lead before Alice pulled back to take the score to 21-17, allowing her to hoist the trophy.
In the men’s section, Trevor Hutchinson took care of Monty Steele but was no match for Andy Crosbie, who had earlier eliminated Stephen Shaw to advance to the semi-final.
Andy will now play the winner of the pending clash between Sid Price and Tony Reis.
Going all in
Mike Martens, Simon Ball, Esther Willemse and Koos Smith won the tabs-in competition, played on Monday.
The monthly FedAuto meat competition will be contested May 3, as will the Northerns Men and Ladies Senior Fours championships, to be played in Vryheid on May 3 and 4.
NBC will be closed on election day (May 7) and the Northerns Zone Trials take place in Vryheid on May 10.
