Shock victory for newcomers Ematekeni

The pre-season tournament came to an unexpected close last weekend.

Newcomers, Ematekeni produced a shock victory in the Newcastle Social Soccer League’s pre-season tournament last weekend.

After eliminating Spartans by three goals to one in the A Division, the first-time NSSL team clinched the finals berth with a 2-1 win over Fairleigh United, also new to the structure.

Fairleigh had earlier accounted for Sporting, with a one-nil win.

Before the finals took place, Stella also secured a spot in the semi-finals with one-all draw against Al-Ahly, while Amahlubi kept itself from the bottom of the table with 3-0 victory over Malawi Stars.

With a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes, Stella were set to advance to the final match.

However, as the pace of the game began to wear down both teams, Amahlubi produced an unbelievable comeback, scoring three goals to somehow clinch the win.

Thus, the final was set to place Amahlubi against Ematekeni.

The latter enjoyed what many call ‘the bounce of the ball’, earning itself the title of the NSSL pre-season tournament champions with a score of three goals to one.

A surprising win has set an altogether different scene for the NSSL League, which kicks off this weekend.

The opening games of the tournament will put Stella against Fairleigh United at 1pm at the Paradise A grounds, while Spartans take on Al-Ahly at 3pm at the A grounds.

Sporting takes on Amahlubi from 3pm at the B grounds.

All representatives are reminded of the NSSL meeting to be held on Thursday at 6.30pm at the Paradise grounds clubhouse.
