Outstanding angling and rewriting the history books

No one ever expected the APL to become such a resounding success and generate such a massive response from the community.

Once again, the purple and orange caps of the Angling Professional League (APL) have changed hands after another intense competition on the shores of Richgate Park on November 30.

No one ever expected the APL to become such a resounding success and generate such a massive response from the community.

This response is taking Newcastle anglers by storm, as the competitions continuously become more competitive, with anglers trying new and trusted techniques to gain the upper hand.

During this year’s final competition of the Vees Micron Enterprise League Two on November 30, it was Paper House that really outshone opponents.

The team netted a total of 117 points, leaving a massive margin of 70 points between themselves and closest competitors of the day, Team Streetwire, that finished on 47 points.

The Fishing People followed Team Streetwire with a total of 45 points and NFH Superstars brought up the rear on 42 points.

Paper House’s Vicky Bhooli was undeniably the best angler at the event, scoring a massive 25 points for his team. Team mate, Ossie Oosthuizen, scored the second highest with 17 points. Kaveer Singh was ranked third with his impressive 16 points for his team, NFH Superstars.

Due to his excellent performance, Vicky Bhooli, walked away with both the orange and purple cap, as he was the top scorer during the competition and currently leads the pack for the coveted ‘Angler of the Year,’ with a total of 38 points. His closest rival is team mate, Ossie Oosthuizen who is currently on 31 points.

Yacoob Patel had the most astonishing catch of the day, which was an impressive bass of 3.020 kg in Zone 4, famous for being carp territory, while fishing using a carp trace and mealie pip.

According to records, this was only the second time since 1991 that a bass was caught during a competition fixture in this zone.

Mr Patel’s achievement was compounded by the fact that he held the record for the heaviest scaled fish of the tournament thus far with a 3 kg bass.

At the top of the league table, Paper House and Team Streetwire stay tied at first place with both teams having amassed 14 points.

The Fishing People and NFH Superstars also find themselves tied for contention of third place with both teams currently sitting on six points.

The next competition will be the Vees Micro Enterprises League 3 to be held at Sandford on January 18, 2015 where the team will be going out all guns blazing in their bid to seek glory.

Membership to the APL is ongoing, membership forms may be collected from Midas Spares (Mr. Omar); the Fishing People (Shabir); Terence Chetty (072 786 0866) or Monty Slabbert on 082 391 6324 for more information.
