Burnt End

The men’s and women’s singles champions of the numerous clubs in the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) district gathered in Dundee last weekend, to determine the overall Champion of Champion winners.

The section winners qualified to play in the semi-finals, which saw Alice Howe (Newcastle) drawn to play Nan Roos (Dundee), and Veronica Malan (Klipbank BC) drawn to play Rita Mayer (Empangeni).

Nan and Veronica were both winners of their games, which set up an interesting tussle between the two skilful singles players.

In a game which went to 25 ends with single shots scored on most ends, it was initially a close affair until Nan piled on the pressure to add to her list of titles.

The men’s semi-finals saw Barry Mutlow (Richards Bay) pitted against Braam van Zyl (Harrismith), and Walter Moore (Bergville) against Errol Herrington (Piet Retief).

Both games were close encounters, with Barry edging out Braam and Walter just getting the edge over Errol.

In the final, the more experienced Barry looked to be set for victory with the score at 17-11 in his favour, before young Walter staged an excellent recovery to turn the tables and win 21-18 and take his first – and no doubt not last – district singles competition.

On the local front, the Ladies Club Drawn Trips competition was completed with Joan Schoon, Esther Willemse and Martie Pepler beating Sue Hutchinson, Eleen Roux and Karien Coetzee in their final encounter.

The men’s trips competition has reached the final stage, which will see Fritz Botha, Lukas Niemand and Trevor Moore take on Lou Roux, Marius Bouwer Senior and Adrian van der Merwe in a game to be played at the end of the month.
