SPORT: Honouring Highlanders’ best and brightest
At the AGM, Alistair van Wyk was re-elected as Chairperson for the next term, with Joe Roux as vice Chairperson and Portia Watson as Secretary.
Boschpick Newcastle Highlanders hosted its annual prizegiving and AGM on Saturday.
The day kicked off quite literally, with a rugby match between the teams of Town and Township, ending in a 25-all draw.
Then it was onto the serious business.
At the AGM, Alistair van Wyk was re-elected as Chairperson for the next term, with Joe Roux as vice Chairperson and Portia Watson as Secretary.
Coaches will be appointed at a later stage.
After watching the Springboks fight to a 25-all draw against the Wallabies, the final order of the day was the highly anticipated prize giving.
Awards were presented to the following:
Max Mkhize received accolades for the season’s best defender, while Gift Mambas received an award for stellar practise attendance.
The award for player loyalty went to Oliphant Koorts.
Herman Pieters received his dues for showing the greatest progression, while Shane van Rooyen was awarded for showing the most potential.
Highlanders II was honoured as the season’s best team.
Wessel Botha was voted the top junior player, and Mthoko Nkwayane received an award as the best senior player of the season.
The final award was the prestigious Sportsman of the Year prize.
This was awarded to Ruan Fourie, who made his provincial debut as part of the Sharks under-19 squad this year.
The evening was rounded off with a braai for players and management.
