Butokukan Newcastle excel at championships
The two-day tournament took place at the Cullinan Community Sports Centre in Cullinan, Gauteng. Karateka contested for the top spot in kata on October 6, followed by kumite on October 7.
Martial arts teaches its students, perfection and excellence can be found in perserverance and practice.
This was evident when five karateka from Butokukan Newcastle were selected as part of the Butokukan South African team for the World Union of Karate-Do Federations (WUFK) Invitational, and the South African Shotokan Karate Academy (SASKA) Championships.
The two-day tournament took place at the Cullinan Community Sports Centre in Cullinan, Gauteng. Karateka contested for the top spot in kata on October 6, followed by kumite on October 7.
In the individual events, Paiuren Dass won gold for kata and earned himself a bronze medal for kumite, and Sohil Bharat won bronze for both kumite and kata disciplines.
The highlight for the Newcastle students was when the kata team of Henko Bruin, Chardy Beamson and Danè Beamson defeated seven competing teams, and thus won the gold medal in the Junior Open Team Kata event.
The Butokukan SA Team managed to win a total of six gold, four silver and nine bronze medals at the event.
