Bowling news by Burnt End: Singles bowlers go it alone
In the preliminary round of the playoffs, Trevor Smale beat young Flippie and Ron beat club-mate Trevor Hutchinson, both winners then moving into the quarter finals.
A pleasing entry of 30 men and 21 women participated in the Northern Zone Singles Championships last weekend, at Newcastle Bowling Club.
The men were divided into 10 sections and the women into seven, with each player then playing two games within the section to determine the section winner.
The ladies’ section winners were Noela Dreyer and Alta de Kock (both Vryheid Bowling Club), Alice Howe, Sue Hutchinson and Michelle Steele (all Newcastle BC), Sylvia Malan and Nan Roos (Dundee BC).
In the knockout playoffs, Alice firstly accounted for Alta before beating Noela to move into the final.
In the other half of the draw, Sylvia beat Sue and then went on to beat Michelle who had earlier recorded a victory against Nan.
Alice then continued her good form to record a 21-15 victory in the final against Sylvia, thus annexing the Northerns title.
After some intriguing games in the men’s sections, the section winners were Flippie van Vreden, Brendon van Vreden and Errol Herrington (Piet Retief BC), John Cross and Hogart Gevers (Vryheid BC), Tony de Pooter (Volksrust BC) making a welcome return to the greens after a major neck operation, Trevor Hutchinson, Stephen Shaw and Ron Howe (Newcastle BC).

In the preliminary round of the playoffs, Trevor Smale beat young Flippie and Ron beat club-mate Trevor Hutchinson, both winners then moving into the quarter finals.
Here Trevor went on to beat John and Errol (who had earlier beaten Hogard) to move into the final.
Meanwhile in the other half of the draw, Brendon beat Tony before being beaten himself by Ron, who had earlier enjoyed a good tussle against Stephen.
The final between the two Newcastle players was a ding-dong affair.
Interesting tactics ensued with Trevor preferring very short heads and Ron counteracting with longer heads.
Trevor then managed to go into the lead which he maintained to beat a game Ron 21 to 15, thus adding to the Senior Singles title he won last year.
The winners and runners up now qualify to play in the KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls playoffs against the winners and runners up of the Midlands and Zululand zones, to determine the District champions.
Zululand qualifiers are Helene de Wet and Joey Evans, Barry Mutlow and Chalkie Kelleway, and representing the Midlands will be mother and daughter, Barbara and Fran Baleri, Rodney Perrin and Walter Moore.
A number of pleasing improvements have been made to the gardens and club surrounds, and Club President Koen Pretorius extended a huge word of appreciation to all members who have contributed in one way or the other.
