Newcastle Mall Kestrels continue on its league

Zululand started well, but an inspired spell of bowling from Ewart brought Amajuba back into the contention to win the game.

Newcastle Mall Kestrels had its first match in the 50-over league at Linpark on Sunday, October 29.

Going up against Martizburg Cricket Club, the Kestrels were in dire straits, with K. Manickum from MCC taking eight wickets in his 6.3 overs.

Hussain Essop of Kestrels was the only batsman to reach double figures, scoring 33 runs, while seven of his team mates failed to get off the mark.

Kestrels performance was dismal, as the team was only able to score 62 runs, all out.

MCC raced to victory, and only needed eights overs to pass the required target of 63 runs, without the loss of a single wicket.

The Kestrels will now have to regroup, as it faces Masibemunye in round two.

The KZN Inland Development League was launched this season with Zululand, Amajuba, Dundee, Ladysmith and Estcourt grouped together.

Y&R Development Amajuba’s first game took it to Vryheid, for a match against Zululand on Sunday.

Batting first, Amajuba amassed 235 for six wickets from 50 overs. The main contributors to the score were Chris Ewart who ran up 86 runs, Brandon Rossol who scored 41 runs and Johan Ferreira, who secured 32 runs.

Zululand started well, but an inspired spell of bowling from Ewart brought Amajuba back into the contention to win the game.

Clifford Dougherty batted superbly for the hosts, scoring 68 runs, but when Ewart removed him, the game tilted in the visitors’favour.

Divan Geel claimed the final two wickets, which secured Amajuba its first victory of the season by 35 runs.

Y&R Developers Amajuba will next face Estcourt at Arbor Park Sports Grounds on November 21.

In local matches, the third round of the Spur Super Saturday League took place on Saturday, October 28.

Due to the rain and a soft pitch, the game between Paradise and Phoenix was cancelled.

However, Old Boys and Asians were able to face each other.

Old Boys posted 218 runs for five wickets in 30 overs, where Tinus Laatz top scored with 75 runs. He was supported by Henri Linde, who contributed 44 runs.

In reply, Asians only lost two wickets as they chased down a difficult target. Sohail Gori hit 53 runs, while and Sabir Babr secured 86 runs. This took the team to victory, and this completed the first round of matches in the A-division.

The Itemba Security Night League featured four matches namely:

Phoenix who beat Asians by 97 runs.

SAPS continued to impress its competitors, by beating Warriors by 104 runs

The Bengal Tigers scraped a victory of 11 runs against Highlands.

Lennoxton then beat ArcelorMittal SA by 99 runs. Sanjeeva Wijayarantha and Bilal Khan scored the bulk of the runs, with 59 and 56 respectively.
