MUST READ: Amandus sets his sights on the Olympic games

He said his skills on the wrestling mats has proven to be beneficial to rugby, as it made him physically stronger, and helped him remain focused on the game.

Wrestling is not merely a test of physical strength, but rather a sport which relies on mental discipline as well.

Amandus de Jager began wrestling when he was just six years old, after being introduced to the sport through a friend.

“A friend of mine invited me to come and give it a try, and I enjoyed it so much that I joined the Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club.”

Now 11 years old, Amandus has developed a strong passion for the sport. “I enjoy everything about wrestling, from being able to wrestle my opponents to developing friendships.”

Since taking up wrestling five years ago, Amandus has flourished this year by taking part in several championship competitions.

In August, Amandus participated in the KwaZulu-National Championships where he won two gold medals.

In September, he received his South African colours. Then in October, Amandus participated in the South African Championships where he was placed in fourth position. These achievements he accredited to the valuable life lessons he acquired through wrestling.

“I have learned discipline and determination are important in life.”

While an avid wrestler, Amandus also plays rugby.

He said his skills on the wrestling mats has proven to be beneficial to rugby, as it made him physically stronger, and helped him remain focused on the game.

“With wrestling there is no team to help you win, it is all on you.”

Amandus said in the future, he would like to be selected for the South African Springbok team and participate in the Olympic Games.

As he prepared to achieve his dream, Amandus was fortunate to have the unwavering support of his parents.
