Highlanders to join Pumas league

Last Friday night, Highlanders hosted 47 rugby hopefuls at its annual club trials, with an additional 10 players excused due to other commitments.

Highlanders will join the Mpumalanga Premier League in 2018.

Head coach, Andre Swanepoel confirmed the team was recently granted permission by the Sharks rugby union to join the Steval Pumas this season.

This has also opened more doors for budding rugby players.

According to Swanepoel, the Highlanders under-20 side will play three matches in March as trials for selection into the Steval Pumas u-20 Currie Cup team.

The final of these matches will be a curtain-raiser in Nelspruit.

“The good news for Highlanders is that Boschpick Engineering will continue as sponsor for the 18th year running. For supporters, the good news is there will be rugby at the Arbor Park Grounds every Saturday.”

Swanepoel said there was abundant talent on show.

“The future looks bright for the club, with a lot of young players coming through. The evening was well supported once again by loyal Highlanders supporters.”

In the pre-season, Highlanders faces Volksrust twice in an away game on March 2 and a home match on March 9, and will attend the Sentraal Rugby Day on March 17 in Dundee.

The NKZN League kicks off on April 7 against Nelspruit and Ladysmith.

“Highlanders is looking forward to an exciting 2018 season,” Swanepoel concluded.
