Cold winter weather results in a record low catching season

The penultimate outing on the NFWAA calendar was fished at Spionkop Dam, situated about half an hour’s drive out of Ladysmith.

The association’s president, Vish Govinder, liaised with the very accommodating officials of the resort and secured sufficient shoreline for over a hundred eager anglers to fish.

Very few were familiar with the layout of the dam or where the hot spots would be, but this did not seem to matter as the rising sun revealed a view of a huge expanse of water with breathtakingly picturesque surroundings.

Anglers spotted a few species of antelope as well as zebras and giraffes en route to settling at their chosen spots.

Those who had fished the dam before promised the first-timers a memorable fishing outing based on their previous experience. The outing proved to be memorable, but for all the wrong reasons.

The collective number of points was the least accumulated for a league outing; however, the top positions saw an all too familiar pattern. Ladysmith narrowly beat Itec Freespool into second place by a mere two points, with Riverside and Chelmsford a further two points adrift. Docrats, Endumeni, and Ace Aqua finished in equal last place.

The heaviest carp was caught by Prenesh Pandoy of Ladysmith, and Rodney Ince of Itec Freespool won the prize for the heaviest non-scaled fish.

Both prizewinners received an outright miniature trophy as well as a R200 voucher sponsored by Devland Impuphu wholesalers.

The final league log standings see Itec Freespool finish above third-placed Chelmsford and therefore face Ladysmith in the Champions Cup, which will be sponsored by Jafar Meats.
