Local ironwoman Celeste van Rooyen is at the forefront of fitness and health

Since she was a young girl, sport and physical fitness have played an integral part of Celeste's life and at the age of 10 she joined her first gym class.

When it comes to the world of fitness and health, Celeste van Rooyen is at the forefront of it all, advocating a healthy lifestyle.

Celeste is a highly qualified personal trainer who has gone above and beyond in obtaining a collection of qualifications, ensuring she puts her best foot forward when it comes to improving the quality of life of all who train under her.

Born and bred in Newcastle, Celeste was raised on a farm along with an older brother and her parents. She attended Hutten Park Primary School and later went on to attend Ferrum High School.

Since she was a young girl, sport and physical fitness have played an integral part of Celeste’s life and at the age of 10 she joined her first gym class.

She has since accumulated over 30 years’ worth of experience in the fitness industry. She credits local gym owner, Van Zyl Conradie for playing a major role in familiarising her with weight training and helping her to achieve her sporting goals.

“Athletics and hockey were my main sporting interests at school. When I was 13 I joined the then Yskor Athletics Club and was given the opportunity to participate in many sporting activities around South Africa which allowed me to meet and train under several coaches, senior coaches and on occasions, international coaches, who contributed to my performances, achievements and practical training,” she said.

By the age of 19, Celeste was the under-17 and under-19 South African School’s Champion and SA discus record holder. She was also chosen as the top female athlete at the South African under 19 junior championships.

Apart from athletics, Celeste also had an interest in bodybuilding, eventually winning a South African title and holding various provincial titles.

After completing matric, Celeste obtained her Diploma in Retail Business Management and a senior Diploma in Christian Ethics.

However, her love for sports participation and training had made her ambitious, dedicated, and disciplined to continue doing what she loved best.

“My mindset is grounded in a cocktail of activities in relation to my qualifications. I enjoy helping others by using regular exercise to improve their quality of life. I decided to continue my studies in the fitness industry to obtain a National Diploma in Exercise Science Personal Training/Conditioning Coach and a National Diploma in Exercise Science and Advanced Personal Training/Exercise Specialist.”

Celeste has since completed the following courses to ensure that she stays up to date with the current and new fitness developments:

  • Functional Training
  • Kettlebell Training
  • Kids Development
  • Sport Psychology
  • Sport Conditioning
  • Speed
  • Agility and Quickness
  • Studio Box
  • Spinning Instructor
  • Further education in Spinning
  • Advanced Lab Cycling/ Spinning Instructor
  • First Aid Level One
  • National Athletics Coaches Assessment Course
  • Gym Management

Today, more than ever, fitness practitioners play a major role in the health of people. Celeste says much more is needed to be done to educate people and encourage them to start a suitable exercise programme and stick with it.

“As fitness practitioners, we have a moral and professional obligation to our clients to keep up to date with the latest research in exercise science and methods of training, as well as to distinguish between real training and an activity that could be included in a fully integrated training programme,” she concluded.
