George Weber passed away at the age of 54 from heart-related health complications last year.
At the time of his passing, he was in the process of putting together an event that combined his passion for golf with his love of helping people.
“Sadly, George passed away before he could host the fundraising golf day he had been planning. As chairperson of the Newcastle branch of Solidariteit Helpende Hand, I decided to honour his memory by taking over the event and hosting it this year,” said Jacques Breedt.
Weber’s wife, Belinda, described him as a man with a very big heart who did a lot for those less fortunate than he was.
“Before we moved to Newcastle, we had a business in Vryheid, and George also did a lot for that community. He was like a father figure to everyone who knew him, always available to lend a hand or give advice,” said Belinda.
Breedt said the funds raised from the George Weber Golf Day will be used to supplement the nutrition programmes at schools during the December holiday.
When schools close for the holidays and feeding schemes come to a halt, many children from less fortunate homes are left without a reliable source of daily meals.
“We decided to use the money raised through our fundraiser to put together as many food parcels as we can to feed as many children as possible during the school holidays,” Breedt explained.
Breedt described the event as a beautiful day on the greens, which was well supported by about 50 golfers.
“We would really like to thank the community for supporting and for donating prizes, including the two full sheep we were able to award the player who came first,” he concluded.
In first place were Willy Clayton and George Meyer with 47 points. Gert Booysen and Raymond Hitzeroth claimed second place, while Manie Mostert and Wico Goosen came third.
“This was the first golf day hosted by the Newcastle branch of Solidariteit Helpende Hand, and it was a great success. We are looking forward to hosting a bigger and better one next year,” said Pierce Joubert, a member of the organising committee
