Champion players shine at KZN Preliminary Masters Singles

The KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls (KZNCB) Preliminary Masters Singles Championships were hosted by Newcastle Bowling Club last weekend.
Twelve men and twelve lady bowlers were selected to compete, with the winners qualifying for the main Masters event set to take place in the Midlands in April next year.
- In the ladies’ competition, Urcilla Marshall (Dundee, 15 +45) won Section 1, with Heather Fathers (Ladysmith CC, 9 +22) finishing second.
- In Section 2, Sioux le Grange (Ladysmith CC, 12 +35) claimed the top spot. Wanita Boettger (Mtunzini, 9 +20) took second place.
The final saw Urcilla continue her impressive unbeaten run. She took an early lead and never relinquished it, securing a win against a determined Sioux.
The men’s competition delivered equally exciting bowling.
- The winner of Section 1 was decided only in the last game of sectional play.
- The two unbeaten players, Bennie van Vuuren (Newcastle) and Ian de Jager (Dundee), faced each other.
- After a close encounter, Bennie edged out his gallant opponent to win the section (15 +39), while Ian came second (12 +34).
- Section 2 was won by Johnny Stander (Empangeni, 15 +25), another unbeaten player.
- Mtunzini’s Lou van Eminis (9 +9) secured second place.
The final between Bennie and Johnny was thrilling, with both producing excellent bowls. Peels were called on five occasions: 4, 6, 7, 12 and 15.
Club praised for hospitality Bennie held a narrow 18-16 lead before Johnny played an outstanding shot.
He removed Bennie’s second shot and scored four shots to move into a 20-18 lead.
On the next end, Johnny scored the final shot to clinch the title against his spirited opponent. Urcilla and Johnny now qualify to compete in the prestigious Open Masters event.

Newcastle Bowling Club is to be congratulated on hosting another exceptional tournament. Players praised the club for hospitality, catering, greens, and facilities.
