The Newcastle Touch Rugby Tournament, held at the Arbor Park Sports Ground on January 10, delivered an engaging mix of fun and fierce competition, marking a successful outing for the growing sport in the region.
Event organiser Bongokuhle Nkosi, popularly known as Coach Shaka, said the tournament was only the second touch rugby event to be hosted in northern KwaZulu-Natal, highlighting its significance for the sport’s development.
“The initiative continues to gain momentum, signalling promising growth for touch rugby in the region,” he said.
The Lembe team was again crowned champions, following up their victory in Vryheid with another dominant performance in Newcastle.
Competing in a round-robin format of five matches, Lembe won all their games convincingly, showcasing superior fitness, cohesion, and tactical discipline throughout the day.
The New Generation team secured second place after an impressive campaign, offering strong competition in the final standings.
“Their performance highlighted the depth of emerging talent within the local touch rugby scene,” said Coach Shaka.
Tournament organisers extended their gratitude to all players, supporters, and sponsors who contributed to the event’s success.
Special appreciation was expressed to Eagle Peak Spur, which sponsored the winners and runners-up with meal vouchers, allowing players to enjoy a well-deserved post-tournament lunch and refreshments.
Coach Shaka also thanked Newcastle NTT Nissan for its sponsorship and ongoing support, as well as the Arbor Park Sports Ground management for making the facilities available and ensuring a smooth hosting experience.
“With growing participation, increasing community interest and continued support from local businesses, the Newcastle Touch Rugby Tournament is set to become a regular and impactful fixture on the northern KZN sporting calendar,” Coach Shaka concluded.
