Itec Free Spool club reels in the trophies

The Itec Free Spool Angling club held its annual awards evening at Leokop Chalets at Chelmsford Dam on Saturday, June 21.

Anglers were eager to reap the rewards of a competitive season, with the club finishing close runners-up in the league and grand challenge, under the umbrella body of Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA).

Ski Mohan, club captain, won the trophy for the heaviest scaled fish caught for the season, with his staggering carp catch of 4.42 kilograms. SV Gounden and his son Seelan also had a bumper season. Mr. Gounden won the trophy for the heaviest non-scaled fish and was crowned the club’s Knockout Champion.

In his first season with the club, Seelan won both the Champion of Champions and the Angler of the Year titles. Senior citizen and former captain of the club, Trevor Boltman walked away with the league honors.

Clifford Robson and Roland Ince captured the heaviest scaled and non-scaled titles respectively for the social meets.

“Congratulations to all our trophy winners,” said Ronnie Rampersadh, the PRO for the club. “Let’s hope the team will be even more competitive in the new season.”

A framed certificate of appreciation was presented to Sam Mtshali, hospitality management officer of Chelmsford Resort in recognition of assistance rendered to Itec Free Spool during the hosting of the open competition.

After the formalities of the prize giving, members sat back and enjoyed some well-deserved liquid refreshments as well as a lamb spit braai, sponsored by Ronnie Naidoo.

Itec Free Spool is in the infancy of its existence as a fully-fledged angling club. In its debut season (2012/2013) the club finished fourth on the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association log table.

There has been a marked improvement in the 2013/2014 season. During the past season, the club acquired a generous sponsorship from local businesses, which enabled the club to procure uniforms.

The club also hosted a successful overnight bank angling competition during March this year. These are major achievements in the two year’s existence of Itec Free Spool Angling Club, and can be attributed to the hard working executive body namely Zain Essop, Shabir Ismail, Ronnie Rampersadh, Ski Mohan, Seelan Gounden, Clifford Robson the president, and loyal members.
