WHAT began as an intense struggle between rugby rivals, Vryheid and Pongola, on Saturday ended in victory for Vryheid Rugby Club’s first team.
It was a tense game, with both teams testing each other’s will and fighting for their spot in the finals.
Although Pongola boasts some of the biggest players in the league, guts and heart from the Vryheid side overcame and the final score at the close of play was 52 – 15 to the home side.
Stix Mbatha opened the scoring with an amazing try, beating the opposition to the try line with his phenomenal pace.
Vryheid’s defense line proved to be almost impenetrable as Pongola struggled to get near the try line, despite their best efforts.
Man of the Match and Vryheid Prop, Wynand Pelser, scored two spectacular tries, both times receiving the ball in the middle of the field and delivering to the try line, fending off the opposition with unstoppable force.
“For the first time in a long time, our forwards stuck to their guns and did the specific job that was expected of them,” said coach, Rich Verster proudly of his team, adding, “Everybody did what they needed to do as a team.”
Francois Scheepers gained the confidence to maintain a 100 percent kicking record, despite a string of difficult kicks, after slotting a 65m penalty kick.
Vryheid Rugby club would like to thank the public for their support throughout the season and look forward to their continued support for the upcoming final on Saturday, July 26, against Newcastle here at home.
Coach, Rich Verster and the committee of Vryheid Rugby Club have gone to great lengths to ensure that this will be a final match not to be missed, having planned an even bigger event than the one which they hosted last Saturday for the semi finals.
Local band, Black Whiskey will perform again, as well as Willie Birkenstock and a few other local musicians joining him on stage. There will be a surprise performance by the beautiful Leandri Small just before the main match and many other great treats for fans and supporters.
The finals will come down to three matches, with the third division and first match of the day kicking off at around midday on Saturday. The second division will follow at approximately 2:00pm and the main match, Vryheid vs Newcastle will kick off at approximately 4:00pm.
Current Newcastle coach, Andrè ‘Swanie’ Swanepoel, will be bringing a strong team to the match on Saturday, with Newcastle having the advantage of experience on their side. They are a versatile team, strong up front and good on the ground, not to mention their speed and dangerous outside back line.
Vryheid, although reeling from their brilliant season thus far and surely growing used to the feeling of victory, should not go into this battle overconfident, as Newcastle is a strong team, having beaten Pongola 55 – 3 three weeks ago.
